The Pinup Saints
Jazz Hands and Club-Z Points
Crtic A: Well I think shaving off my mustache worked as a disguise to get into The Pinup Saints: A Night of Naughty Pleasure at the club 1234 - kinda neat address, isnt it. And the interior's all white and zen-like!
The 10pm show is for the women featuring male dancers and oh hey look a full bar, lemme go get a lady type drink.
Critic B: I like your new look. You should have done your chest, too. Nice crowd, a full 40 people, in a space designed for 4000. Woo-eee! Let the party begin! Mixed crowd, lots of 20-somethings, some 30-somethings & some 40 & 50 somethings. Checkout the tall chicks, hired help?
Critic A: Oops you're right, its all about the details isnt it - more on that eh? But hey my wax job down there feels soo smooth....ahem...aah lets see now wasnt it odd to see a female MC on the video introducing the numbers, trying to be all sexy, speaking only English even though the majority of the crowd appeared to be Francophone. There were several confused concepts in this show, which lacked focus.
There were women in sheer white outfits trying to get the women around us to dance to the ambient music prior to the show. These same women later would perform at the men only show. Poor girls.
Critic B: Poor girls indeed. Unionize! There were many things about this show that really bothered me. Here are my contributions to the Top 10 List of why this show was bad (it didn't even have the energy to suck, that would have required more effort & $50 in the back room):
10 - No stage management: would it have killed them?
9 - Cupcake Lite: they've heard of the concept, maybe even tasted it ... so let's try (half) baking this at home.
8 - Costumes Lite: With a little more effort, it could have been costumes from hell. Wife-beaters - good choice! Yay, Club-Z points!
7 - Choreography Lite: There seems to be a theme here. Dunn-de-dunn-de-dunn-de ...
6 - Dancers who think they are on Broadway.
5 - Dark & sexy? Or just weird.
4 - Brought to you by Pain d'Oré!
3 - VIP section - what VIP's???
2 - Whip boy ... it's fun & games until you put out an eye
1 - Jazz Hands ®
Critic A: Yeah like why is it female erotic dancers have to spend money on really nice expensive undies and have spangles and sequins but for the boys - a good ol' pair of tighty whities they pick off the floor. Where's the sequins dudes??? As for those jazz hands that kept creeping in...although I suppose that at least it looks slightly better than having Graham hands. Sorry ,as much as I love graham and her arthritic ways...hic..
Critic B: There's nothing wrong with Graham (Contract!). Anyways, I didn't stick around for the men's show, but looking at the white dresses the girls were wearing, it seemed pretty cheap, too. Looked like they got bulk white material, and just stitched it together really fast. This isn't the large shows you are used to seeing.
This was Stripper Lite: kinda like watching a marriage that should have ended years ago. Going through the motions, but no one's home. Give me Graham any day!
You have to admit though, Jazz Hands ® were really funny. Twist, turn, grin, grin, accent, Jazz Hands ® !!!
Critic A: The men were able to casually throw off one handed backflips and a hand down the crotch (not at the same time). They had a pretty good handle on doing harlem shakes and c-walks and some breakdance floormoves and doing that hip hop sort of pelvic thrust thang. Indeed hip hop does have 'sexy moves' but the tempo is completely diffrent when one does erotic dance. The point got missed there.
Critic B: I agree. Great technicians, but mediocre, poorly conceived material. I felt a bit sorry for the cast. The Clockwork Orange number was creepy, not sexy. Hats, makeup & canes (they used grand-dad canes from the Phamraprix) alluded to the film (about the nature of violence), but the costumes had nothing to do with it, the music was from left base and the choreography was Cats revisited.
My only question was "Why?"
Critic A : It was odd wasnt it? Their other cane dance number to the song "Feelin' Good" was stronger and more interesting, but the guy drinking from a bottle then spewing the water out at the audience? Thanks, I really wanted your germs in my drink! Hey, do you think that alcohol neutralizes the germs?
Their audience particiation idea was neat, though. They placed a chair downstage and asked for a volunteer to sit. Then the dancers would do their dance bring the female up and have her participate a bit.
But back to your question - "why" Perhaps they're trying to do something for the club going crowd?
Critic B: Yeah, especially since one of the major scenes in Clockwork Orange was the rape scene ... seriously guys! Well, what's your verdict on this show?
Critic A: Cheesy erotic stylings trying to be serious sexy for the hip and happenin' club crowd. Geez I'm parched gotta get another drink. Lets get outta here.
Critic B: I hear ya!
